It is better to be a lion for a day than a sheep all your life. – Elizabeth Kenny
As you begin your Hero’s Journey in pursuit of happiness and fulfillment, there will be guardians at the gate standing between you and the path that leads to your goals and aspirations.
These guardians have been known by many names, but you may know them as fear, doubt and disbelief. To reach your goal and seize your prize, you will have to face these guardians full on and expose them for what they are, not what they pretend to be in your mind.
Fear is probably the most powerful of the guardians. We fear what we don’t know. Fear is born out of not knowing the outcome or imaging the outcome turning out badly. Apparently we are born with only two fears – the fear of falling and the fear of loud noises. All our other fears are learned. If we can learn them then we can unlearn them.
Fear is a part of life. It’s OK to be afraid, but don’t be scared. Don’t let your fear incapacitate you and keep you from acting. Feel the fear and do it anyway. Once you get going you will find that your fear isn’t nearly a big as you imagined it to be and in some cases completely unfounded.
Doubt is another powerful guardian. Doubt springs from lack of self-confidence. We doubt when we don’t believe. And belief starts in the mind. As Shakespeare said, “Our doubts are traitors to us all.” If we do not feel confident that we are capable of doing a thing then doubts start to pour in and trigger fear. Doubt weakens our resolve. It weakens our belief in what we are doing.
Disbelief is a condition of the mind. There was story told of a great shaman somewhere in South America who was performing many miracle healings amongst the local villagers. He received a lot of press. One reported asked him if what he did really worked and the shaman paused for a moment and then said to the reported, “You know it doesn’t matter if what I do works or doesn’t work. It only matters if the people believe it works. That’s when the miracle happens.”
Without belief it is nearly impossible to even begin to set foot on the pathway to your dreams and aspirations. Without belief your hero’s journey is not likely to even begin.
Belief starts with you, in your own mind. If you don’t believe, then the miracles won’t happen for you. And as Henry Ford said, whether you believe you can or believe you can’t, you are right.
